Crafted to Kill: Yarn, String, and Other Cat Choking Hazards

Our feline friends seek enrichment by being curious and exploring their surroundings. Unfortunately, sometimes that curiosity can place them in dangerous and even fatal situations. In this post, we will look at some of the most common items likely already in your home that can pose a choking hazard for your cat.

String and Yarn:

String, yarn, ribbon and twine can be fun toys for cats while supervised, but risky on their own. Not only can it get tangled around their necks, but these items also can be very dangerous when ingested. Always keep a close eye during play time, and keep any gifting or crafting supplies safely stored and out of reach.

Rubber Bands and Hair Ties:

Just like string and yarn, rubber bands and hair ties are an extremely common household item. Even more commonly, they get dropped on the floor and go unnoticed. Be sure to keep close tabs on these pesky bands, as some cats will swallow them leading to choking and intestinal blockage.

Chicken Bones:

You may think this is a no brainer, but cats can be sneaky especially around tasty chicken. Always keep an eye on or dispose of your chicken bones right away. If ingested, they can splinter and puncture the esophagus, stomach or intestines, or become lodged, causing choking or an intestinal blockage.

Tinsel:

Tinsel can make holiday decorating festive and exciting, but can quickly turn your happy holiday into a scary one. Cats are intrigued by the noise and reflective nature of tinsel, but ingestion can lead to extreme health risks like intestinal obstruction, digestive issues, internal puncture wounds or even surgical intervention. Always ensure holiday decorations are kept out of reach, and use pet friendly options where available.

Choking presents a significant risk to the well being of our cats, and pet parents must take every precaution to prevent the hazards in our homes. If you suspect your cat is choking or experiencing difficulty breathing, call or visit the emergency vet right away.

With proper care and attention, you can ensure your furry friend lives a long, joyful, healthy life.
