Caffeine Kills: These Pick-Me-Ups Can Put Your Cat Down
Caffeine might just be humans' favorite chemical. A cup of coffee or tea in the morning to wake you up. A refreshing soda with a meal. An energy drink that helps you power through the day. Even our favorite candies and desserts contain chocolate, which, believe it or not, also contains caffeine.
We have a very high tolerance for caffeine and value the boost it gives us, helping us get through the day. But our furry friends can't process it the same way we do, rendering caffeine toxic for cats.
To keep your cat healthy, keep them away from:
Coffee (beans, grounds, and brewed)
Tea (loose leaf, bagged, and brewed)
Soda
Energy drinks
Chocolate
Diet pills
Painkillers containing caffeine
What will happen if my cat makes contact with or ingests caffeine?
Cats can make external physical contact with caffeine and show no to mild effects. However, ingesting caffeine can cause an increase in the contraction of skeletal muscles and the muscles of the heart, leading to heart palpitations that can be fatal.
